Each of these presenters brings their unique view of Southern Culture and Southern Magick to our conference. These headliners will be offering PAPERS presentations, workshops and performances throughout the Mystic South weekend.

Najah Lightfoot

Najah Lightfoot

Najah Lightfoot is a multi-award-winning author. She is the author of Powerful Juju: Goddesses, Music & Magic for Comfort, Guidance & Protection, and the bestselling Good Juju: Mojos, Rites & Practices for the Magical Soul. She is a regular contributor to the Llewellyn annuals and a contributor to Taschen, The Library of Esoterica – Volume III – Witchcraft. Her magickal staff is on display and part of the permanent collection of the Buckland Museum of Witchcraft, located in Cleveland, Ohio. Najah is a fellow of the Sojourner Truth Leadership Circle, sponsored by Auburn Seminary. She lives in Denver, Colorado, where the blue skies and the power of the Rocky mountains uplift and fill her soul.

Stephanie Rose Bird

Stephanie Rose Bird

Stephanie Rose Bird is a practicing Green Witch and Hoodoo. She is a magick maker with a passion for African diasporic spirituality, folklore and mythology. Bird contributes to Llewellyn Spell-a-Day, Witches Companion, Llewellyn Herbal Almanac, Llewellyn Magical Almanac, and she writes a column for Witches and Pagans. She is the author of numerous books; including the award-winning, Sticks, Stones, Roots and Bones, and her most recent, The Healing Power of African American Spirituality (Weiser Books) and 365 Days of Hoodoo: Daily Rootwork, Mojo and Conjuration, (Llewellyn). African American Magick (Weiser Books) will be published in 2023, it is a republication of Four Season of Mojo. Bird contributed to Llewellyn Complete Book of North American Folk Magic and Warrior Magick. She is a presenter at Sacred Waters Retreat in Tennessee. Bird is an avid swimmer, fine artist, herbalist, aromatherapist, novelist, mom, wife and animal companion.

Laura Tempest Zakroff

Laura Tempest Zakroff (she/they) is a professional artist, author, performer, and Modern Traditional Witch based in New England. She holds a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design, and her artwork has received awards and honors worldwide. her work embodies myths and the esoteric through her drawings and paintings, jewelry, talismans, and other designs. Laura is the author of several bestselling Llewellyn books including Weave the Liminal, sigil witchery, Visual Alchemy, and Anatomy of a Witch, as well as the artist and author of the Anatomy of a Witch Oracle and The Liminal Spirit Oracle. Laura edited The New Aradia: A Witch’s Handbook to Magickal Resistance and The Gorgon’s Guide to Magical Resistance from Revelore Press. Laura is the creative force behind several community events and teaches workshops online and worldwide.

Cory Thomas Hutcheson

Cory Thomas Hutcheson

Cory Thomas Hutcheson is this year’s PAPERS VIP and a folklorist, university educator, and magical practitioner currently living in the Upland South. He has spent more than a decade as the co-host and author of the New World Witchery podcast and website, producing hundreds of episodes and articles on North American folk magic and witchcraft. He has a doctorate in American Studies from Penn State, with specializations in folklore, ethnography, and religious studies. He is the author of New World Witchery: A Trove of North American Folk Magic (Llewellyn, 2021). He has also contributed to a number of magical publications, including WItches & Pagans magazine and the witchcraft anthology The Gorgon’s Guide to Magical Resistance (Revelore, 2022), as well as scholarly publications like the Oxford Handbook of American Folklore and Folklife Studies (Oxford UP, 2018). His forthcoming books, Llewellyn’s Complete Book of North American Folk Magic (Llewellyn)and Conjuring the Commonplace: A Guide to Everyday Enchantment and Junk Drawer Magic (1000Volt Press) will be released in 2023.
